İÇDAŞ OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY

As İÇDAŞ A.Ş., which has created a culture of occupational health and safety and instilled this culture in its employees by proactively applying all kinds of preventive measures in the field of occupational health and safety, even before the enactment of the Turkish Law No. 6331, for safe work environments;

On November 8, 2007, the company entered the OHSAS 18001:1999 Occupational Health and Safety Management System audit by Bureau Veritas Certification Organization and earned the internationally recognized certification, becoming the first company in its sector to hold this certificate. The transition to the OHSAS 18001:2007 standard, which replaced OHSAS 18001:1999, took place on December 2, 2008. In 2020, the company transitioned to the ISO 45001:2018 standard, which replaced OHSAS 18001:2007.

Occupational health and safety is of utmost priority both for our stakeholders and due to the nature of our business. Providing a safe and healthy work environment for our employees is one of our primary responsibilities. As İÇDAŞ, we take comprehensive measures to protect the health and safety of our employees by implementing the ISO 45001:2018 Occupational Health and Safety Management System.

 


In order to fulfill our commitments to occupational health and safety, we provide comprehensive occupational health and safety training to all new employees. The purpose of this training is to ensure that our employees recognize potential risks in the workplace, understand safe working methods, and fully comply with our occupational health and safety policies.

Our risk assessment and management procedures focus on hazard identification and risk reduction. We aim to minimize occupational health and safety risks by using the hierarchy of controls, such as eliminating hazards, selecting less hazardous options, engineering controls, administrative controls, and personal protective equipment.

Our emergency action plans and fire safety measures are also part of our occupational health and safety policies. All necessary risk-based measures have been taken at our facilities, and in case of an emergency, our Fire Department, consisting of expert fire technicians, operates 24/7.

Our workplace health and safety unit provides services 24/7 to meet the health needs of our employees. This unit, consisting of a workplace physician and other health personnel, ensures easy access to healthcare services for our employees.

As part of our policies, we continuously monitor and improve our occupational health and safety performance, developing our work processes based on feedback from our employees.

As İÇDAŞ, we aim to prioritize quality, occupational health and safety, and environmental health in all our activities, by establishing and maintaining an Occupational Health and Safety Management System that is embraced by our employees under the leadership of top management. To achieve these goals, we adopt the following principles:

  • İÇDAŞ A.Ş. is committed to voluntarily and consciously implementing the OHS management system established in accordance with the requirements of ISO 45001.
  • Our main objective is to sustain our commercial existence while protecting the health of our employees.
  • While carrying out our production and investment activities, we will eliminate hazards and minimize OHS risks to create the safest and healthiest working environment for our employees.
  • We will always develop and implement practices and projects to continuously improve our OHS performance.
  • We will minimize occupational accidents and diseases.
  • We will ensure that employees and employee representatives actively participate in all processes of the OHS Management System through their opinions and suggestions.
  • We commit to carrying out all our activities without endangering the health of our employees, and with the aim of leaving future generations a better quality of life and a safer, more livable world, while fully complying with OHS legislation.

AWARDS & PARTICIPATIONS

The “Productive Worker-Employer, Businesswoman and Businessman of the Year” awards, traditionally presented annually by the National Productivity Center, were held on December 24, 2007, at the Ankara Chamber of Industry with the participation of Minister of Industry and Trade, Mr. Zafer Çağlayan. İÇDAŞ Çelik Enerji 

Tersane ve Ulaşım San. A.Ş. was deemed worthy of the award in the category of “Productive Worker-Employer of the Year.”

The 2008 edition of the same awards ceremony was held on December 29, 2009, at the National Productivity Center Conference Hall with the attendance of Minister of Industry and Trade, Mr. Nihat Ergün. Once again, İÇDAŞ Çelik Enerji Tersane ve Ulaşım San. A.Ş. received the “Productive Worker-Employer of the Year” award, reinforcing its prior 2007 achievement in the same category.

In 2008, İÇDAŞ received the “Best National Practice” award at the 5th International Occupational Health and Safety Regional Conference organized by the General Directorate of Occupational Health and Safety under the Ministry of Labor and Social Security.

In 2010, the “Safe Maintenance” project by İÇDAŞ was awarded the “Best National Practice” in the Good Practice Awards competition held by the Ministry of Labor and Social Security and the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA).

Due to exemplary projects aimed at increasing efficiency, İÇDAŞ was once again honored in 2007 and 2008 in the “Productive Worker-Employer” category organized by the newly named General Directorate of Productivity of the Ministry of Science, Industry and Technology. In 2009, one of our employees received a “Certificate of Contribution to Productivity” for dedicated efforts. Occupational safety holds a significant place in all productivity efforts.

The Zero Accident Project implemented in İÇDAŞ facilities was shared with the international steel industry. The paper titled “Steel Production Without Any Accident,” submitted to the 16th International Metallurgy and Materials Congress held in Istanbul on September 13–15, 2012, was accepted by the Scientific Committee and published in the Congress Proceedings CD following an oral and visual presentation.

As part of the “Working Together for Risk Prevention” campaign conducted in cooperation with the Ministry of Labor and Social Security and EU-OSHA in 2012–2013, our project titled “Zero Accident Production Through Cultural Change” was selected as the national winner and represented Turkey in the European Good Practice Awards competition.

Our good practice example titled “Zero Accident Production Through Cultural Change” was selected first place in the national stage for its complete alignment with criteria, its demonstration of employee and union involvement, and its emphasis on management commitment with a practical theme.

In the “Golden Glove” and “Golden Suggestion” competitions organized by MESS to raise awareness in the field of occupational health and safety and to encourage best practices, İÇDAŞ Çelik Enerji Tersane ve Ulaşım San. A.Ş. earned the “Golden Suggestion” award.

We participated in the “Turkey Disaster Management Strategy Document Development Workshop” organized by AFAD on January 28, 2015, at the Meyra Palace Hotel in Ankara, with a presentation titled “İÇDAŞ Disaster and Emergency Communication System.”

At the 5th National Productivity Congress organized by the General Directorate of Productivity of the Ministry of Science, Industry, and Technology on October 6–7, 2015, a paper titled “Optimization of Chemical Consumption During Resin Regeneration in the Condensate Water Purification Plant of the Thermal Power Plant” was presented.

Our project titled “Little Archaeologists” made it to the finals in the “TİSK 2015 Corporate Social Responsibility Awards” organized by the Turkish Confederation of Employer Associations (TİSK).

At the “Workshop on Health and Safety Hazards in the Metal Recycling Sector” organized by the Ministry of Labor and Social Security and the Occupational Health and Safety Research and Training Center (ÇASGEM) on December 23, 2015, a presentation titled “Health Risks and Occupational Safety Problems in the Metal Recycling Sector” was delivered on behalf of the Turkish Steel Producers Association (TÇÜD).

At the 8th International Occupational Health and Safety Congress organized by the Ministry of Labor and Social Security on May 8–11, 2016, our poster titled “Employee-Centered Risk Management Modeling” was presented.

At the 9th International Occupational Health and Safety Congress organized by the Ministry of Labor and Social Security on May 6–9, 2019, a presentation was delivered on “Spiral Education Modeling in Occupational Safety Training for Power Plants.”

On April 17, 2015, we attended the conference titled “The Importance of Communication in the Gallipoli Campaign and Disaster Communication,” organized by the Emergency and Disaster Management Department of Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University, with a presentation titled “Disaster Communication in Workplaces and Occupational Health and Safety.”

At the IX. National Occupational Health and Safety Congress held in Adana from November 30 to December 2, 2017, we presented the following:

  • Oral presentation: “Modeling and Control of the Effects of Potential Major Industrial Accidents Caused by Chemicals in a Leading Integrated Plant.”
  • Poster presentations:
    • “Correct Use, Selection, and Effectiveness of Personal Protective Equipment in a Leading Integrated Plant.”
    • “Permanent and Effective Method for Reducing Workplace Accidents Through Basic Occupational Health and Safety Training.”
    • “Chemical Hazards in Ports Handling Dangerous Goods and Measures to Ensure Safety.”
    • “Good Practice Example on the Transportation, Storage, and Emergency Procedures of Ferrosilicon Used in the Iron-Steel Sector.”

At the Occupational Health and Safety Week Seminar organized by MESS in May 2011 at Istanbul Mövenpick Hotel, we gave a presentation titled “Safe Maintenance.”

At the XVI. International Metallurgy and Materials Congress organized by the Chamber of Metallurgical Engineers (TMMOB) from September 13–15, 2012, at TÜYAP Fair and Congress Center in Istanbul, we presented our paper titled “Accident-Free Steel Production at İÇDAŞ.”

In the “TİSK 2016 Corporate Social Responsibility Awards,” our project titled “Little Archaeologists” was deemed worthy of an award.

In the “Golden Glove” and “Golden Suggestion” competitions organized by MESS, İÇDAŞ Çelik Enerji Tersane ve Ulaşım San. A.Ş. once again earned the “Golden Suggestion” award.

At the IX. National Occupational Health and Safety Congress held from November 30 to December 2, 2017, at Çukurova University in Adana, our paper titled “Modeling and Control of the Effects of Potential Major Industrial Accidents Caused by Chemicals in a Leading Integrated Plant” was presented.

At the “European Good Practice Awards” themed “Occupational Health and Safety in the Digital Age,” our application titled “Good Practice Examples for Eliminating and/or Reducing Risks in Temperature Measurement Applications in Steelmaking Processes” was awarded the Jury Special Award out of 52 applications from 41 different organizations, and the award was presented on November 7, 2024.

Our project was honored with the Jury Special Award at the “European Good Practice Awards” themed “Occupational Health and Safety in the Digital Age,” organized by the General Directorate of Occupational Health and Safety under the Ministry of Labor and Social Security, and the award was presented on October 7, 2024.

We also participated in the “International Multidisciplinary Congress of Natural and Engineering Sciences” held on December 6–7, 2024, with an oral presentation titled “The Evaluation of Methane Gas Explosion Risk in Confined Spaces – A Case Study in Shipbuilding Industry.”
