İÇDAŞ continues its efforts with the goal of efficient use of natural resources, minimizing waste generation, and recovering formed wastes back into the economy by placing the circular economy approach at the center of its operations. Circular economy principles are adopted in all production processes from raw material supply to the final product stage; thus, both natural resource usage is reduced, and environmental impacts are minimized.

Waste management activities within the company are conducted in accordance with national and international standards, and the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System is effectively implemented in all facilities. In line with our Environmental Policy; reducing waste at the source, evaluating wastes with potential for recycling and recovery, and disposing of hazardous wastes without harming the environment are among our fundamental principles. Within the scope of zero waste and circular economy approaches, it is targeted to prevent waste generation and increase reuse and recycling rates. Waste management at İÇDAŞ is managed with a holistic approach addressed from the design stage of production processes.

Integrated Recovery and By-Product Applications

Production processes in the facilities are planned in accordance with Best Available Techniques (BAT); waste, wastewater, emissions, and energy elements are evaluated together during process selection, and waste generation is minimized at the source. Many waste types are utilized as by-products through ongoing recovery and reuse applications and are used as raw material substitutes in different sectors.

While flue dust is sent to licensed facilities for zinc and lead recovery, mill scale wastes are evaluated as raw materials in iron and steel production. Electric arc furnace slags are used as artificial aggregate within the scope of by-product compliance certificates and are gained by the construction and industrial sectors.

Recovery and Circular Economy

Similarly, iron sulfate wastes originating from acid phosphate plants are evaluated in fertilizer production, while grit wastes from shipyards are used as alternative raw materials in the cement sector. Wastes formed in port waste acceptance facilities are evaluated as alternative energy sources in clinker production plants, while waste oils are sent to refining plants to be recovered into the economy. R&D studies conducted with universities for the use of ladle furnace slag in the lime sector and the industrial use of fluidized bed thermal power plant ashes also continue.

Zero Waste and Source Separation

Other waste types such as packaging waste, wood waste, waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE), as well as waste batteries and accumulators are directed to licensed recycling facilities and included in recovery processes. In line with the zero waste approach, İÇDAŞ holds the Zero Waste Certificate in its facilities and is expanding practices aimed at separating wastes at the source.

  • A dual waste system has been established in the facilities, and waste management and separation trainings for employees are regularly conducted via digital platforms.
  • Food wastes are collected separately and recovered through composting applications, ensuring that organic wastes are gained back into the circular economy.
